First impressions…
There's a lot of cool features but a ton of things that confused me (and some I still find tedious/confusing/etc.)
Pros:
- Loving that eyes don't have to match the territory you chose!
- The campaign is a neat concept and gives us some lore as we go through it
- The art and wolves look really cool (one reason I was interested in joining to begin with)
- Dark mode!
- Cooking and Fishing are nice mini-games & between that and the campaign it seems food is easy enough to come by
- Auto-battling is a nice mechanic
- NO death mechanic! I hate how some pet sims have your pets grow old and die so the fact our wolves won't is great!
- Customization through dressing them up and scrolling them is really nice
Cons:
(many have already been mentioned)
- Exp grinding is very… slow and a tad odd. It feels weird that rolling in dirt and defeating an enemy (including a higher level one) both grant +1 exp
- I feel like I HAVE to spend hours grinding to get anywhere both with the campaign and things like mining (which tbh is going to be a whole other bullet point)
- I'll admit, getting my wolves to lvl 10 wasn't too bad however the fact they still lose to a lvl 4 is really strange (and like wise my 2 starter wolves beat a lvl 6 bear while they were both around lvl 2). It really makes me wonder how much is rng and how much the levels matter.
- We can't do anything except auto-battle. Don't get me wrong, auto-battles are nice! But I've lost many battles because my wolves get an enemy to low health… and then don't finish it off. They'll attack any other enemy and then take a ton of damage because they still have 3 attackers instead of just getting rid of one. I'm also not too certain I understand how the attacks/defense/other stats even work since it's all automatic
- It'd be nice to have a toggle that could let us pick enemies to target
- Could be nice to have potions
- Wild wolves are a PAIN. Rare to encounter and out of the 3 I managed to find after hours of grinding I got a grand total of 0! Now I understand wanting them to be rare but I've seen another person mention they went through I think about 15 WW before one joined. The rng is just awful and rather disheartening. You're essentially getting a rare chance to encounter one and then an additional rare chance it actually joins, which makes it feel impossible unless you're lucky
- Think there should be an item that makes it join automatically or at least increase the chance of a wolf joining
- Have more ways to find a wild wolf (similar to how Flight Rising eggs can be found by their coliseum system and their scavenging function)
- Mining…. I honestly don't get how it works. Many things here feel like they need a tutorial and this is definitely one of the ones high on the list for me. Without a recipe I have 0 idea how to craft axes or wheels to help with it and I still have ore that my wolf for some reason stopped smelting? He had the energy to work but is now just sitting around in the furnace and stopped smelting things.
- Hunting requirements are odd but it just means I don't really do it, especially given the energy cost to do it.
Overall:
This looks like a very promising game but could use some explanations/guidance.
Just basing this first experience with the one when I joined Flight Rising… Lorwolf is super difficult to understand without looking at guides, unlike FR where I could just poke around and get a good idea of what was needed to do (or in the case of Baldwin could already see what I needed for brews so long as I was at the right level- no buying recipes or guessing)
Unlike FR I feel this game has a lot more baby sitting and grinding to it but maybe that's because I haven't found a good ‘rhythm' for dailies on here yet. The fact we can do practically everything on here endlessly throughout the day (once time limits are up) is both great to avoid boredom and makes me personally get tired of doing it just so I can get the same item(s).
Once this is open to play I'm sure getting new wolves won't be a huge issue but right now, as someone who doesn't want to breed my wolves due to personal preference, it's practically impossible to get a new wolf without a lot of luck.
I can't really compare this to how it was on FR in the beginning stages though, as I came onto FR in 2015 when dragons weren't hard to come by for cheap or even free. I have heard they were super expensive even for the most basic of dragons so perhaps it would have been similar to how LorWolf is atm.
As of now I'm still willing to see where this site goes but I'm not sure how long I'll stick around, especially as someone who doesn't always have hours a day to sit down and do some of the activities.
