@minim that's a good counterpoint! i'd like to see the badges displayed on profile as well in that case (not everyone posts on the forums so im thinking of those players), but that's another thread i think.

I have mixed feelings on this, but I think I'm leaning no support.

On the one hand, after earning my first set I immediately went to check if crafted achievement apparel would also be soulbound, because I knew I could probably sell it for a decent amount this early on. And everyone loves money lol

On the other hand, I feel this would drastically devalue the sense of how rewarding the achievement system is for later players. Right now, no matter when I join the site, if I want those apparel I have to do those achievements. It gives big, far off goals to chase and make steady progress towards by engaging with the system at your own pace.

If they let you sell them, these prizes are immediately worth comparatively less the later you join. As more of the player base earns them, supply will go up and demand will go down. The first players to unlock the recipe will make drastically more money off those items than later players will, as they will entirely control the supply for that period. If you want to profit before the price crashes to that of the base crafting materials, it's suddenly a race to the unlock. Players who join after that race is over now have very little reason to chase those unlocks themselves, as they will never make the same level of profit off it and can just buy the apparel now.

So I think I would rather they stay soulbound. Then both old and new players will always have the same level of reward coming from achievements. If you don't happen to like one of them, oh well. I think I'd prefer to be a new player annoyed that I don't love some of the apparel, rather than be a new player annoyed that people made bank off these items in the past and I never will.

@Hawkfeather You definitely make a good point - but if the achievement apparel stays soulbound I think I would like an option to sell it to the vendor, which you can't currently, considering I can craft extra copies when I want. I'd prefer they not be soulbound, personally (and I would think the same even if I was a new player arriving in the next few years, even if some people would be annoyed about the lower prices).

I think that they would only go so far down, in price. Crafting them will be inherently cheaper to whatever the final price settles as, as someone who has the ability to craft the apparel would just sell the composite parts otherwise. This means that getting the achievement will still earn money, if you chose to sell the apparel, even if the profit is not large enough to make more copies for the express purpose of selling them. I would also argue that the demand for apparel is going to be much higher than any other type of item (since they are for decorating your wolves), which naturally causes the price to stay up. But again, even if the price plummeted to 1 pebble in a matter of minutes, I'd still prefer the option because they would be nice to gift to other players!

I would totally support giving the apparel a vendor sell price! That seems completely fair. I wonder if it not having one might be a limitation of how their soulbound system is set up? Either way, I would definitely support revising that to allow you to vendor it.

Totally fair! I think we're just going to have a difference of opinion on that particular point. For example, I actually would prefer not to get the achievement apparel as a gift lol It'd either lessen the excitement of getting to that tier myself (because I'd already have the item), or if I was already there and wanted more then it would take away the opportunity for me to craft it myself (I'm so behind on leveling crafting). I mean I wouldn't turn it down and I'd of course be thankful for any gift, but overall I'd rather get gifted things from the mole market so I can save my pebbles. So just different perspectives!

What I do want to point out though is this bit:

Crafting them will be inherently cheaper to whatever the final price settles as, as someone who has the ability to craft the apparel would just sell the composite parts otherwise. This means that getting the achievement will still earn money, if you chose to sell the apparel, even if the profit is not large enough to make more copies for the express purpose of selling them.

This definitely isn't something I would count on as being a sure thing. While the price of the parts is a decent baseline guess, I play plenty of games where there are crafted items worth less than the materials sell for. This can happen for any number of reasons, for example:

  • The materials may be used to make other things, so will inherently hold value due to versatility
  • The crafted item may be crafted repeatedly for crafting xp rather than the item itself, and then sold at a loss in high quantities
  • The item itself may be acquired in some manner without crafting, and those people can sell it without considering the crafting cost
  • The materials may be gathered for free from the game so the average player doesn't consider their worth when pricing
  • Checking the price of every component may be tedious, so people just don't bother doing the math at all

Of course, I'm not saying it will drop below the price of its parts. I do think you're right in that apparel is one of the more valuable items on site. I'm just saying it's not a given that it will stay at or above that price, and that it's hard to predict. So that's still something to consider when assessing unsoulbinding. It's definitely possible the price could plummet, in which case being happy with the reward comes back around to our difference of opinion, as discussed above.
