[QoL][Companions] Rework the companion system

Hi and awoooo everyone,

I want to bounce on Catesanova1 suggestion ([Companions] Locator) because it was a good idea and I think it needs to be expanded.

As time passes, and we all get more Companions and Wolves, managing them is getting harder and harder. If not sometimes frustrating. I feel it's time for an overhaul of the companion system.

I'm opening this thread so we can discuss what could be done to get that system better.

Here is a list of what could be done: (I'll edit this post as talks go on)

Supported:

  • An easy way to see what companion is attached to what wolf (see Catesanova1 post)
  • A dedicated page to manage Companion/Wolf pairs
  • A new way to train Companions, maybe a new profession? (training camp)

Controversial:

  • Give the ability to use any linked companions in hunt parties as long as there is at least one wolf (for bigger parties, two wolves)
  • Untie the ability to move companion between wolves from the play cooldown timer.

I'm curious to know what you guys think of this and to see your ideas.

Yes, big support!!

In addition I also wish that companions could be switched around even if they are on playing cooldown. I definitely get that you shouldn't be able to play with it again while it is on cooldown, but the fact that a wolf that has a companion on cooldown equipped is barred from so many things (selling, trading, releasing, switching new companions you might need for the campaign, the gauntlet or hunting..) feels like bad design. Keep in mind that some companions have a cooldown of 6 or even 12 hours!! That is a long time to wait to .. play the game.

I don't know about removing companions that are on a cooldown because that promotes equipping & removing companions constantly, but I do feel like there should at least be a "move companion" option where you can change whom they're attached to. They can't be removed as a companion until their play timer is 0, but if you have a wolf with no companion you can swap it onto that wolf so you can release the one it started on. That would be a way to mitigate the play-waiting.

I'm also split on using a wolf's companion that's not attached not to any of the wolves in the party as long as there's one wolf. It would be ideal for the awkward teams of that require 3 wolves and 2 companions (especially for hunting), but I think that option should be limited to hunting in general. One wolf guaranteed to start with the option for any companions. That may be bias since we're in the early game with not much variety for wolf traits.

big support of the first 2..

  • An easy way to see what companion is attached to what wolf (see Catesanova1 post)
  • A dedicated page to manage Companion/Wolf pairs

No support for this one.. that's part of the strategy of the game! pairing up your wolves and companions

  • Give the ability to use any companions in hunt parties as long as there is at least one wolf (for bigger parties, two wolves)

No support on companion cooldown removal - I would rather be able to own 100 of the same companion and put on all my wolves! The cooldown is annoying occasionally but it serves a purpose & 99% of the time it doesn't affect you

I support a total companion overhaul, even if it interrupts some of the ways we are used to interacting with companions currently.
I definitely wouldn't call the timers "strategy" by any stretch of the imagination. Keeping the individual companion timers set might be a pain if they aren't attached to a wolf the entire time, but it's something that would help the QoL of the game a lot, and the game needs a lot of help in the QoL department.
I'd be happy to not have to min-max my hunting team wolves to such a degree as they rarely, or ever, actually keep companions on them longer than it takes to hit the hunt button, before they are swiftly removed again. And those hunting companions certainly never get played with after they are leveled to the bare minimum needed for the hunts they are used for. Surely that is not the intended way to interact with the mechanic (that can be said about a lot of lw's mechanics), but it's what the game encourages you to do.

Awoo,

Sorry, for the delayed response, been busy lately.

Regarding my proposal : Give the ability to use any companions in hunt parties as long as there is at least one wolf (for bigger parties, two wolves)
I realize I have forgotten to say something important. I didn't mean to suggest any companions, as in any companions on the site or any companion you own. But any companions that are linked to a wolf.

Personally, I see companions having one caretaker (the wolf they are linked to and can play with them), but also being part of the den. (just being in your inventory doesn't make them part of the den) So I feel that as members of the den they could help with some tasks like hunting without following their caretaker.

Regarding the play cooldown. I don't think it should be removed. But it should be linked to a companion. So you can move the companion any time, but can't spam play with them.

I understand these problems don't affect every one, but when you do a lot of hunting like me, for example, they quickly get bigger and bigger. With companions constantly blocked by the cooldown timer, some hunts become close to impossible to fill up at a reasonable success probability. I have, for example, completely abandoned doing high-level hunts because of that.

I don't really see any 'strategy' when it comes to hunting. It is simply mix and match. And with the companion cooldown, the limited variations in synergies, and the limit of wolves => companions, it is just an incredibly annoying 'mini-game' to play.
In terms of campaign and gauntlet, I get the strategy part ( = team building) a bit better (although I still have my opinions on especially the gauntlet and how it could be improved) but there is literally 0 strategy when it comes to hunting. And perhaps this also highlights the issues, the gauntlet, the campaign AND hunting all use this same feature, while there is, in my opinion also a very large aesthetic part and lore part in pairing companions and wolves.. Not even to speak about the fact that some companions aren't even worthwhile to pair up because of the abysmal rewards they give when played with. The way it works now, with it tying in to pretty much everything but having a lot of limitation to change it up is simply not fun. I for example have completely abandoned the aesthetics and lore ideas I had for wolf-companion pairings, because it simply doesn't work out.

Support for everything. I see where the design decisions came from but it makes the game so frustrating to play, especially taking into account how long cooldowns can be.
