If you release a wolf with a companion attached does the companion return to your inventory?

The question is the same as the title I am doing a den clean, and releasing some wolves, and don't want to wait for a 5 hour timer to tick down.

IIRC apparel also gets "released" along with them, and their description/tag/etc., remain as they were.

I don't mind it too much. Kind of nice if you don't want to keep a wolf, but do want to preserve the lore that you might have made for it. (This will be more prevalent as the game ages.) But they should put a little warning about it, or maybe a verification pop-up if you're trying to release a wolf with items attached etc.,
