They're used in crafting. Most of the crafting recipes you unlock through achievements use them.

One thing they do is Enchant Pickaxes, and i believe they can also make apparel... Im not 100 sure

Apparel, like others have said! I've written a guide for crafting apparel and have included the various recipes and materials, including the Ashes at the bottom of the first post.

Ashes are required to make the site silks and enchanted pickaxe.
