Was wondering this, myself, and feeling a bit silly that I couldn't see how to do it. I feel better knowing I wasn't the only one. :')
If there really is no way of turning it off, then I hope we eventually get one, because I'm not really a fan of auto-explore (especially if it's adding to the site's lag and causing error pages in campaign).
