I see no reason as to why the resting period should start at any moment other than when the stud is bred.
The stud isn't doing anything except sitting there waiting for the listing to be purchased, and it does unnecessarily punish the stud's owner if they either change their mind or need to alter the listing for any reason.
I agree with several reasons above, including that this could possibly deter the use of the FM studding system for the riskier options.
Support. I like many others have a male on cooldown who never bred. I like that we have a studding system… but it's discouraging to get a breeding cooldown for,, Not breeding :(

It doesn't work like this on any other pet site I have ever seen and I don't understand how this is useful in anyway to the players and the site. Studding is currently the only way for me to make any moonstones really with how many problems there are with currency balancing and this just makes it extra frustrating, especially when there is no warning even.
It shouldn't work this way. It's just a big inconvenience.

Yes yes yes. Cooldowns should be activated at the time of breeding only, simple as that. The studding system is something I am extremely interested in and excited for but I can't use it if I'm going to be punished every single time a breeding doesn't occur.
If for some reason the code doesn't allow for this to be changed, then we NEED private studding options so that we can make arrangements with other players and not put our wolves on cooldown unnecessarily.
It comes up all the time in the Bugs forum I make a point to bump every single one, because it truly feels like a bug. I will continue to bump all Bug reports related to it as well.
