They were Pebbles during early access, which worked. Flight Rising, a site that's very similar in mechanics to us, uses lair expansions as its main source of treasure sinking and reserves gems for special items and exchanges with other players. There's no reason for a basic gameplay feature to be locked behind premium currency, especially since Moonstones are difficult to obtain in any sizable quantity without either buying them or selling something to someone who has.
Right now, getting Moonstones at all quickly relies heavily on having gotten low-digit or pretty wild wolves, which is pure RNG, having things to trade from other petsites, or offering commissions/custom apparel that other users like, all of which are outside of gameplay, so shouldn't be functionally required for standard gameplay updates.
