In fact, the more I think about it, the more I actually like the idea of a pebble fee. It would allow a companion to be removed and still be playable afterwards, without it being profitable.

And as for companions that give XP or stamina (or you just want to level up your companion faster), then not only would repeated play be incredibly tedious, it would also be a heavy drain on your funds.

I'm having some issues with not being able to trade wolves that have companions attached to them and needing to wait for long cooldowns to end, I would love if some way to remove companions even when they're on cooldown

Support this strongly, along with the suggestion to put the play CD on the wolf for the duration of the "companion lock". I think that would make needing to tie any pebble cost redundant and wholly unnecessary.
The structure we have now is super annoying to deal with, even with a bunch of wolves, since companions are tied so strongly into other parts of the game loop... And a lot of the hunting companions are not ones I want to play with regularly / keep tied to particular wolves after leveling them up. :/ Having to remember to remove them right after sending a hunt sucks, and having to remember to remove a previous companion before playing with them and putting them on CD also sucks.
I don't love the "optimal play strategy" being leaving any wolves you might need for a hunt without a companion, because the only way to prevent accidentally releasing a wolf (a much worse consequence) is to keep them on companion CD.
