A question that definitely does not have any bearing on the future!
If you were stuck in a place that had a different writing system from yours, and you cannot ask someone to help translate stuff (you have to figure out the writing system yourself)… where would you start?

Which language? How much time do you have to learn some of it? I know there are translator apps that let you take photos and it will interpret what it sees. Since it's AI it won't be perfect but it's better than nothing.
Edit: If this is for some type of game, you may want to check out Chants of Sennaar! It's about this very thing and it's pretty cool. Context clues are a big deal in this scenario.
I would start by looking at how much each word is used, how it's used, and if there is any special rule for it, THEN figure out the chance of it being a certain english word.
I would try to find other writing in the area that I could compare with. Maybe something would be labeled and clarify that X means "book" or something.
