I think the time of it being considered as a "serious" business venture by the owners is potentially over (for now? Forever? Impossible to say), since they self-reported the site isn't solvent and able to sustain itself without them having external jobs. Not altogether surprising, you can't run a business very long on vibes and no communication, that goes doubly so for a pet sim that lives and dies on frequent, small updates and QoL progress. That's why we seem to get so many new players, but the core users never really change. Most of 'em just don't have a reason to stay.
The head mod quitting & not being replaced was quite a blow to player morale, I think. They had one person who at least said they would ensure feedback made it back to the team, and that is no more.
It may be a "hobby" for them now, and honestly has always been treated as one. Whether it's a hobby they can afford, and for how long, remains a mystery. But, hey, it's a diversion, and I'll have some fun with my breeding projects, plan on riding it 'til the wheels fall off.
Would not recommend spending any money you can't afford to literally set on fire, though... I stay entirely out of & away from the CA game, as cute as some of the items are. It's the main MS sink, and was probably intended to help the site stay afloat, but I just don't have enough faith to be spending any money. I would maybe feel differently if we got more communication and little updates, but alas.
